TransCore’s Weekly Spot Market Rate Review: Best and Worst Lanes in America

PORTLAND, Ore.-- Based on data from TransCore’s Truckload Rate Index, national van rates on the spot market were up 0.9 percent over the previous week, rates for refrigerated vans (reefers) gained 1.3 percent during the same time period, and flatbed rates were, up 0.3 percent.

Winning lanes for vans included outbound freight from Los Angeles, Stockton, California, and Columbus, Ohio, whose rates were all up 1.6 percent, with Chicago’s outbound lanes not far behind, showing a 1.5 percent rate increase from the previous week. Freight activity at L.A.’s international port picked up, signaling the arrival of consumer goods for the holiday retail season. The big loser was Denver, where rates on outbound lane rates for vans dropped 3.5 percent.

The five major markets – Chicago, Dallas, Denver, L.A. and Philadelphia – each saw an increase in reefer rates, contributing to an upward national trend. Although nationally flatbed rates showed a slight uptick, rates from Philadelphia and Chicago declined 9.9 and 2.4 percent week over week. As fall weather gives way to winter and construction slows, flatbed rates historically decline.
