Got questions about how to stay compliant with the upcoming ELD mandate? You’re not the only one. At the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance conference last month, FMCSA’s top management fielded questions about electronic logging devices from a packed audience. 

The e-log mandate is set to go into effect in December 2017, but there's still a lot of gray area.  Bill Quade, FMCSA associate administrator for enforcement and program delivery, stressed that the rule would not be delayed, but the Q&A posted by Fleet Owner reveals a lot of gray area. For one, the FMCSA hasn't certified many devices yet, and ELD vendors are still waiting to find out how they can self-certify that their devices meet the FMCSA requirements.

From Fleet Owner:

Quade likened the self-certification process to that used by the auto industry, where manufacturers do their own testing and the government issues recalls if problems are discovered later, and so FMCSA will not be conducting regular audits of vendors.

The FMCSA also still hasn’t gotten its Web Services system up and running, which would allow vendors to self-certify. If a truck’s ELD is found to be non-compliant during a roadside inspection, the carrier will get a one-time notice. If it happens a second time, the truck will be placed out of service, and the carrier will have just eight days to install compliant ELDs.

Elogs will not fix stupid nor will it fix the trucking industry.  I am a small business owner who also drives I have one truck. This is not acceptable. Speed limiters nor elogs are any safer then a train in 70 mph wind gust the train will de rail at one point.  These items are just another way for control.

You are stupid.  The government and agencies are run by democrats and republican. Every administration from Reagan to current administration has done something to the trucking industry that we don't agree with.   Grow up. It's not liberals against conservatives. It's anyone who gets in power and does not work for the people. Stop drinking  that Kool-Aid that Fox is feeding all of you who don't know how to think for yourselves. If we could only work together as an industry,  than we could shut down ridiculous rules like this one. But as long as you keep playing the blame game like fox and whenever wants you to do. Then we will stay divided and never realize the power we have. Keep doing their work for them smart guy.

This is the craziest thing I have ever seen in my life.  Paper logs work, the 14 hour rule is weird how the guys are having to log period... all they are doing is causing major major issues in trucking and none of it is solving the problem.  Slow the 4 wheelers down that are spiteful and cause accidents and are not there for the finale.  When they jerk over and slam brakes... I know I've been in the truck with my husband when it happens and prayed we didn't clean a clock.... I didn't vote for Hillary.. I've had enough of liberal agenda.. they are not for America at all.  And Auto self driven truck.. yeah that's a disaster waiting to cause a major pile up.  Let some hacker guide that into a nice office building..

I could not have imagined in 1981 when I started driving that this country would have gone this far, to control every facet of our lives.  Who would have thought that it would be possible for the government to take away the 4th amendment rights from a whole class of citizens.  

Although my company will go up for sale in Feb of 2017, unless I see drastic changes in this rule, and I will be stepping out of a truck, there will be 10 bright eyed and bushy tailed young drivers that will jump in behind the wheel.  They grew up with computers, and have their phones tracking their every movement so their friends can keep up with them.  So they don't see any problem with big brother watching their every movement.  

Now we need a law to put an ankle bracelet on every one at the FMCSA and Anthony Fox so we can keep track of them.  We already know their criminals, the ankle bracelet will just make it easier for us to penalize them when they mess up.

Oh this is great, cant even authorize what is acceptable, and take a truck out of service , cause just at that moment
it is not according to the rules, that are published, is utter buul shiiit ,   The biggest deal, is the DISCRIMINATION
of allowing  2000 or less models on the road with NO ELDS<  I guess those drivers just do what the SAM heck they want

I do not see how anyone who even knows a little bit about trucking can think that ELogs are a good idea. There are to many problems  with mandating them.  There is not enough truck parking as it is. Just recently I40's emergency lanes have began to look like a parking lot. When the drivers time has ran out or is close to running out and they are trying to get to a safe place to park and it is full they have no choice but to side lane park. This is dangerous for the driver and the general public as well. With Elogs the driver will be forced to drive while tired and rest when energized. The human body knows when it is tired and when it is not; this can not be determined by a machine. I know that there are those who do take advantage of running paper logs and falsify them but there are more who actually want to run legal and just make a living. As with anything there are always a few who have to ruin a good thing for everyone. I think that stricter laws should be enforced on 4 wheelers. Rigs can not stop on a dime but they always carry the burden of trying to. I could go on for hours.

It seems the idea of calling others criminals and other slanderous names has taken hold of many a low class individual who thinks they are better then everyone else. No education, not real intelligence, nor knowledge, but very big on the mouth. All to no benefit, except for a momentary feeling of superiority, then it's back to oblivion.

seems the majority thinks its hillary, un fair, if anynone out here even pays attention to, the majority of the house,senate,and who signs this stuff, your near right, but remember,when all this stuff was passed, republicans,with support from, shippers,trucking corperations! the investors, insurence comp,and drivers who believe we should all be controled.passed this. the time fram,and the way, FMCSA does its comments,are the crime. and its remained that way,since those so called meeting about the implementation of the CDL back in 1984. they were meeting and comments were held at federal bldgs,during the work day,only in 5 cities. and we were going broke as driver,O/Os during that time. they found we dont give a shit,we arm chair everything, BLAME THIS ON YOURSELF! if you dont practice goverment,vote,or,write,and allow people into goverment,without fully asking the questions,and getting commitments from that person, then YOU have FAILED! democracy is a cherished ideal, and YOU HAVE FAILED! get the newsmedia out of asking questions and stupid nowhere debates. require the rep you vote  for,stand at attention, and give straight foreword answers,or, boot them out, before they get  started, this is what the OOIDA should be doing,in a public forum,for US! now, repeat, I will as a citizen of the great United States of Americam will, practice democracyand citizenship,and not cheap gossip. get the facts, theres many independant journals today that are far better to read,than cheap headline news. Got off the phone today with Road log. Wont find peoplenet, qualcom, rand mcnalley on any list because nobody knows what the approved criteria will be. Once they know...we will all have to download the updates to be compliant and you will know who the approved "dealers" are so you can buy the correct device. I am "begrudgenly" buying one of these as I just got ticketed in Florida for false logs. The way in motion snapped a picture at a certain time and my log showed another. Was pulled over the following day, 50 in a 45 and thats where the trouble began. This device wouldve stopped the false log but not the speeding ticket. All my fault, only myself to blame. Just got my operating authority so this will sting pretty bad. This is the business. Fight, bitch, and complain all day long, wont change anything. The moral of the story, slow down, duck scales when possible, ride in a pack, drive at night and avoid DOT when possible.

Jack Smith you're partially right. This was passed on the 2012 transportation bill when RRepublican controlled the house but Democrats controlled the Senate. It's been in litigation since then.  I do agree that there are far too many armchair qbs out here though. I have always thought the thing that bothers me the most about this is all the drivers who advocate for elogs. It is very disturbing that many are perfectly ok with our government surveilling them. Because that's all this is. Surveillance with no cause to do so. And without a warrant. And to the ones who think this is OK I have a message for you.  YOU are the PROBLEM!!!!  Stop sitting down as this government takes your freedoms one by one under the guise  of safety.

if the fmcsa is so worried about safety, how do people get a cdl  that can' talk or understand english ? and why don,t the truck driving schools have to teach more then paper work? here in my state when you get old enough to get a license you have to hold your permit four 6 months before you can take your driving test, but you can be a truck driver in just 8 weeks with 80.000 lbs under you, so why don,t they look at some of the real problems, truck driving schools should be six months with one winter, stop bring in all the people that don,t read and under stand english

Better yet, inforce the laws on the books, must read write and speak English to obtain a CDL,  problem is swift and the big Boys charge burger flippers, $7000 to get a CDL then have them sign 2 year contracts, all for a CDL which cost about $300 for your medical certificate  and endorsements and pass the road test!!!

I cringe every time I hear some trucker from some small town In the midwest where they lost the mill or the factory that employed the entire town blame Obama, Hillary, blacks, Mexicans, Chinese, liberals, etc... Blaming Everyone else except the white owners of that business who decided to ship their job to some foreign country where the labor is cheap. Why? So they can make more money.  Then the owners and fox news and conservative politicians convince these people that somehow the Mexicans, blacks, Chinese etc... forced the business owner to move to Mexico and give Mexicans jobs that should belong to good upstanding Midwestern folk. Those Mexicans clearly had a gun to the business owner's head to make him move the company. And now that you all will believe that nonsense. They figure they can feed you any lie to control you and keep them in power.  Remember, NAFTA and Bad trade deals are Obama and Bill Clinton's fault. But if you all were not so easy to be lied to And easily controlled you will remember that the republicans stand for free trade. Shipping jobs oversees is just a reaction to our policies. You can't blame a business owner for operating in a way that is most profitable for his/her company. After all that is the reason someone opens a business. To make money. Free trade only perpetuates that. If a business can leave and cut their overhead in half with no penalty why wouldn't they. If you ever owned a business you would understand this concept. A business is not a charity. They're in it to make money. And just because someone finds a way to be more profitable doesn't make them greedy. Trump has the right idea. We need to tax these people when they bring their products back in. Tax them to the point where it just makes sense to bring the factory back here.

Blaming a white collar business owner for closing his company due to over regulation is the same as one of us owner operators saying ill sell my truck before i put an e log in it. Over regulating any industry and they will move or sell out. Why fight a fight that you cant win? I dont blame any business owner for doing what is best for them. Ive seen over regulation in every field i have worked in. And when you cant save yourself from it, it will bankrupt anyone fast. Just like CARB and their ridiculous fines. Its all a joke anymore. The industry didnt renew manufacturing processes, and ran the industry in the ground,and blames labor costs, BULL, it was the fact, these industries were mostly wholey owned by, hedgefunds,venture capitalist,and the like. wall street controls all the money, hense,we have elected,without knowlege obviously,people who are wholey owned by wall streets mass. you never see anyone there go to jail.for colapse of our economics. quit hilary,trump rehtoric, its only devided the working class, its time to unite to vote out wall streets power. try the site, robertreich.org, he has some funny,but damning videos,easy to grasp,this mess... With this being implemented... When are you going to look at the warehouses that are wasting  driving time?! 6 hrs of our day can be spent unloading and reloading... How is that fair to the average man/woman trying to support themselves or their families? The issues really start and finish there!!!

I don't agree with the ELD, once they start enforcing it, I'll just install it and go up in my rates. If I see that it's not a business anymore, will just sell the truck. I've been on my own, with my own authority now for almost 10 years and have seen so many things going on here in trucking business, fuel price going up, I paid over a 6 dollars a gallon in CA and in FL, and just went up on my rates, they had to pay. If brokers, shippers or consignees take my time, will just charge more, if they don't want to pay, just won't move my truck. It's that easy. Drivers lets make it and take it easy. I have a small company with only two trucks and I drive one of them! The government should leave the log book alone and focus on a lot of other issues like big companies hiring anyone to drive their trucks after a few weeks of training not knowing what their doing sends them out on a trip alone putting at risk thousands of people in danger including my family and your family, many times I've seen them they can't even speak the language, make regulations that you need to have experience on different equipment and work your way up to big riggs that you are experienced with directions and regulations on a comercial vehicles also experience with loading and unloading trucks because if you know this thing you will know if you was loaded wrong if too heavy on one side or another or it top heavy, etc! You have to have people regulating trucks that actually been hands on directly with the business so you can regulate and control the correct way and have common sense not start shootin in the air just to justify their paycheck that their trying to do something about the situation and all this is just to start with because I haven't mentioned other issues that can be addressed like brokers grabbing a bunch of loads to cover and waiting for the last minute to see who does it for less then rushing the driver cause you on a time frame when it you had plenty time to cover the load and know you have John Doe trying to make it and pushing himself to his limits because if he is not on time he has to pay out of pocket! It is a vicious cycle and it needs to stop and until we get someone who stop pointing fingers and actually knows wich way to take this it will never stop and we all will stay wrapped up on all this nonsense regulations he said, she said bullcrap! Let me know if y'all like my solution find someone to pay my bills and I'll dedicate my self to be the spokesperson to see if we can get somewhere!

Every driver is different Walmart needs to stop fining late drivers We need to pay every driver overtime after 10 hours per day. then then the companies would want E-logs. Many companies shortchange drivers every week No company should be alowed to pay a driver on E-log less than twice the state min. wage

EVERYONE of you who are DUMB enough to be driving with an ELD are to blame for this, period!!!!  Most of you are too stupid to shut your truck down for 1 week because it would throw you into a financial panic!!!! I laugh at eveyone of you who said 10 years ago....if they put an elog in my truck i'll quit driving, and where are you 10 yrs later? Driving diwn the road with your ELD glowing on the dash!! Stop blaming the gooberment, swift jb and all the other clowns, [...] And for those who are foolish enough to think rates are going up to compensate, KEEP DREAMING, ELDs have been around since Warner had the bright idea of introducing the "paperless log" for their brainiac drivers who couldnt figure out how to use a pen, ruler and a calculater.....rates will stay tye same because Hunt, Swift, Warner will always have a fresh supply of iduots waiting to drive their junk down the road for 20 cpm....So to all your smart truck drivers driving with an ELD, keep posting and complaining, its cheap humor.......Or better yet when your wondering who to blame for you makin 500 a week, hang your head out the window, look at the shiney thing hangin off your truck and you ll see where to place the blame next!!!!

The problem is not ELDs.

No driver should need to work 11+ hours in a day nor more than 70+ hours a week to make a decent living.
Don't you folks want to see your kids?

The problem is insufficient pay requiring drivers to work excessive hours in order to make a decent income.

ELDs are to curtail the small percentage of irresponsible reckless greedy drivers/companies which is in EVERYONE's interest (motoring public including professional drivers).
