"Some say it's simple to get your authority, and that you should save your money and do it yourself. Other people, including myself, are not sure where to even begin. I used a service provided by DAT to get my authority. It was important to me that it was done right the first time, by people who have done this before."

- Chad Boblett - Boblett Brothers Trucking

"They took me by the hand an led me through all of the diffiult and confusing steps to ensure that I started off on the right food. I cannot say it any clearer than these folks know what it's all about."

  • If you’re wondering how to get your trucking broker license, you’ve come to the right place! Freight brokers need to apply for authority from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), which is housed under the U.S. Department of Transportation. The FMCSA issues broker authorities for any freight broker involved in commerce that crosses state lines. The application includes a fee and typically requires four to six week to process.

  • To start your freight brokerage business, you need to choose your process agent, a representative who can be served court papers in case of legal proceedings. By law, freight brokers must have a process agent in every state where they have an office or maintain contracts. DAT Authority’s services also include handling and submitting your BOC-3 forms to FMCSA to designate a process agent.

  • After submitting your BOC-3 forms, you must acquire a surety bond or trust fund of at least $75,000. On the off chance a contract falls through, this fund ensures you have cash to mitigate the damages. Insurance companies can issue surety bonds, and file them with the FMCSA as well. Fortunately, DAT Authority partners with trusted insurance companies that are able to offer our customers freight broker bonds at special rates.

  • When setting up their business, all brokers and carriers in transportation brokering must complete their Unified Carrier Registration. Freight brokers are required to re-register each year and pay an annual fee. During this process, it’s also important to make sure you’re meeting your state and local requirements for operating a brokerage business.

  • Once you’ve gotten your MC number, you’re ready to get your office set up so you can start brokering freight. In addition to our authority services and load boards, DAT also provides transportation management system software that can help you streamline your business. Our TMS increases efficiency by combining your operations, accounting, and other systems into the same dashboard.

  • First things first, before you start a brokerage, make sure you have a clear plan for building your book of shipper clients, and make sure that you take advantage of online training resources that are available. You can learn more in our freight broker startup guide. When you’re ready with freight to move, finding carriers who are ready and willing to transport freight is simple with DAT. You can check out our free load board demo to see what trucks are available to transport loads. Or, with a full load board subscription, you can post unlimited loads and search for trucks. Before long, you’ll be on your way to creating a successful freight broker company!
