"Some say it's simple to get your authority, and that you should save your money and do it yourself. Other people, including myself, are not sure where to even begin. I used a service provided by DAT to get my authority. It was important to me that it was done right the first time, by people who have done this before."
- Chad Boblett - Boblett Brothers Trucking
"They took me by the hand an led me through all of the difficult and confusing steps to ensure that I started off on the right foot. I cannot say it any clearer than these folks know what it's all about."
- Gregg Knight, LTL Trucking
Carrier registration refers to the requirements you will need to legally transport commercial freight across state lines. Both federal and state regulations apply to carriers to ensure safe and legally sound transportation. Carrier registration requirements include your DOT number, your MC registration number, and securing BOC-3 process agents. With guidance from our professionals, the DAT Copilot™ Authority Program helps you to complete all these steps, and more.
Before you can operate your trucking business, motor carrier (MC) registration is necessary for every carrier and broker. Although federal requirements are different for brokers and carriers, both brokers and carriers will need an MC number from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association (FMCSA). DAT’s motor carrier compliance services can guide you through the MC registration process with ease, offering the most efficient route to getting your federal motor carrier registration.
Brokers need broker registration, which is a bit different from carrier registration. Like carriers, brokers need to register with an MC number from the FMCSA. Once a broker is registered, you’ll need an FMCSA docket number, BOC-3 process agents, and a bond or trust fund of at least $75,000 to insure your business. With the experts at DAT, the DAT Copilot™ Authority Program for Brokers helps you to cover all these requirements — plus any state-level brokerage specifications.
Federal requirements for carriers include: USDOT number, MC number, operating authority from the FMCSA, and BOC-3 process agents. Carriers also need to comply with federal motor carrier tax regulations, as well as drug and alcohol testing with the FMCSA clearinghouse. Before you can get on the road, you’ll also need to comply with regulations in your state — namely IRP and IFTA registration.
The DAT Copilot™ Authority Program isn’t just about speeding up the carrier registration process — it’s about helping carriers save money. By minimizing errors and delays, you can avoid losing out to frustrating downtime. Our consultants can offer the most cost-effective ways to get your registration, as well as the most accurate ways to complete your requirements.
