"Some say it's simple to get your authority, and that you should save your money and do it yourself. Other people, including myself, are not sure where to even begin. I used a service provided by DAT to get my authority. It was important to me that it was done right the first time, by people who have done this before."
- Chad Boblett - Boblett Brothers Trucking
"They took me by the hand an led me through all of the difficult and confusing steps to ensure that I started off on the right foot. I cannot say it any clearer than these folks know what it's all about."
- Gregg Knight, LTL Trucking
The first thing you’ll need to start your own trucking business is operating authority. Operating authority applies to any for-hire carrier over 10,000 gross vehicle weight (GVW) who will be crossing state lines. To be a legal operator, you’ll need motor carrier authority from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT). You are also required to get an MC number, which is issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). This number allows you to transport regulated commodities.
First, you’ll need to choose a unique name for your company. From there, you’ll need to consult an accountant to determine whether sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, or corporation titles work best for you. Then, you’ll need to decide exactly what you’re hauling and obtain proof of insurance, along with a host of other requirements.
Obtaining your MC and USDOT numbers requires a lot of preparation, such as providing proof of insurance, filing Unified Carrier Registration with the state you’re located in, and appointing process agents. Any incorrect paperwork can mean a delay in obtaining your operating authority. The best trucking authority packages make sure your applications are accurate and up-to-date, so you can get your small business moving faster.
If you choose to file your paperwork yourself, the trucking authority cost will likely be somewhere around $340, plus the price of insurance. However, if you submit incomplete or inaccurate paperwork, your application will be held up until your information is complete, which costs you in the long run. The best trucking authority packages include fees, and for just a bit more, ensure your applications are complete and are approved on the first try.
It can generally take about five to seven weeks to get through both the state and federal approval processes. Federal approval on its own can take about 16 business days. In addition, you’ll need insurance policies, registration fee payment, and completed BOC-3 process agent forms. So you will likely need to spend quite a while waiting. However, the DAT Copilot™ Authority Program mean you spend less time waiting with the confidence that your paperwork is accurate and up-to-date.
