October Flatbed Rates Were Highest of the Year

The national flatbed rate for October was the highest of the year, boosted at least in part by rebuilding efforts in Florida and the Gulf Coast after the storms from a couple months ago.

Volumes were up and down over the course of the month, though, as markets adjusted to constantly changing demand. The Memphis market posted the biggest gains for October, with outbound flatbed rates up 10%. Lots of major flatbed lanes were at or near $3/mile last week.

All rates below include fuel surcharges and are based on real transactions between brokers and carriers.

RISING

  • Las Vegas to Sacramento averaged $3.19/mile
  • Rock Island, IL, to Indianapolis also climbed to $3.03/mile
  • Roanoke, VA, to Harrisburg, PA, surged to $3.41/mile
  • Atlanta rates were down in general, but the lane to Baltimore climbed to $2.95/mile last week

FALLING

Flatbed rates were down out of a handful of Sunbelt markets: Atlanta, Savannah, Fort Worth, and Phoenix. The biggest declines for the month were on lanes out of Raleigh and Baltimore.

  • The lane from Cleveland to Harrisburg backed off some previous highs, falling to $3.56/mile
  • Houston prices have mostly been neutral, but the lane to Wichita, KS, fell to just $1.77/mile
  • Out West, Reno to Seattle declined to $1.98/mile
  • Phoenix to Ontario, CA, was also down, at $1.81/mile
