A smarter approach to shipment tracking – General Transportation’s move to Trucker Tools

Founded on everyday efficiency and practical service, General Transportation has weathered a rapidly changing freight landscape by keeping costs low and staying open to smart technology change. This spring, after three years with MacroPoint as their tracking provider, the General Transportation team decided it was time to review every line item of spend — including their shipment tracking platform. Their story highlights what happens when diligent research, trusted referrals, and open-minded leadership converge at a pivotal moment.

Why now? Reviewing spend and seeking value

General Transportation’s leadership saw the evolving tech landscape — and seized the chance to improve their own operations. “We were reviewing our spend and trying to find alternatives that would help us save. Every item was up for review from the biggest spend to the smallest,” they explained. To make the most informed decision, the team tapped their network, reading industry reviews, talking to trusted carriers, and seeking peer recommendations. The name “Trucker Tools” surfaced again and again in those conversations.

“As we put feelers out with acquaintances in other organizations, and talked to trusted carriers in our network, Trucker Tools was routinely recommended. We scheduled a demo, requested a proposal, and quickly decided this was the best solution for us.”

What made Trucker Tools stand out?

The decisive factor was value — delivered simply and transparently. “The biggest factor that stuck out to everyone within the organization was the all-inclusive price or package you receive with Trucker Tools. There are so many more offerings from Trucker Tools than strictly tracking.” Competitors offered a la carte pricing, where every extra feature came with its own upcharge. Not so with Trucker Tools.

“There was very little discussion if this was the correct move for us because we achieved our goal of cutting costs while adding more tools to our arsenal than we could’ve dreamt. Most of our conversations were about what Trucker Tools was hiding. There were so many features at an extremely fair price that there had to have been a catch about this deal.”

Hands-on support and a strong start

Their sales experience only affirmed their choice. “Johnathan Phillips [account representative] was willing to chat with me any time I had an off the wall question I had.” That authentic support helped smooth the transition and ensured all of General Transportation’s concerns were addressed from the outset.

Day-to-day improvements and what’s next

Efficiency gains were quick and meaningful. “We have saved time with our tracking process because Trucker Tools holds themselves to a higher standard with 5-minute pings and the ability to ping a driver if you need an immediate update. There’s no second guessing if a driver is on time or going the right direction from the accuracy and frequency of the pings.”

Beyond faster tracking and fewer check calls, the General Transportation team sees an opportunity to expand their platform use. “We have been with Trucker Tools for a little over two months now, and we have plans to incorporate more offerings into our normal business practices. Those plans include the load board and the imaging, which will allow us to image items far more efficiently than we could imagine.”

General Transportation’s advice to other brokerages weighing their options is simple: Don’t just look for savings — look for a partner with features, support, and transparency built in from day one.
