Artificial Intelligence is no longer just a buzzword — it’s actively changing how businesses protect themselves online. Here’s a look at what AI means for cybersecurity and how to be protected.

How AI is helping

Think of AI like a security guard who never sleeps and never stops learning. Traditional cybersecurity tools react to known threats — AI-powered tools can spot unusual activity in real time, even when the threat is brand new. This means faster detection of data breaches, phishing attempts, and ransomware before serious damage is done.

The other side

Unfortunately, the same technology that defends businesses is also being used by bad actors. AI makes it easier to craft convincing fake emails, automate large-scale attacks, and even mimic voices or faces to trick employees. This raises the stakes for every organization.

How you can stay safe

Practical steps to use:

  • Know and Limit who has access to what – Who can view records, financial data, or internal systems? If a former employee still has login credentials, that’s an open door for attackers.
  • Use strong, unique passwords and a password manager – AI tools can crack weak or reused passwords surprisingly fast. Using a different password for every account sounds overwhelming, but a password manager does the remembering for you. Think of it as a locked vault that only you can open. This one step eliminates one of the most common ways attackers get in.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) – Even if someone steals your password, two-factor authentication creates another obstacle to navigate around.
  • Pause before you click, especially on urgent messages – AI can write emails that sound exactly like your bank, your boss, or a trusted vendor. An often used tactic is to create urgency. Before clicking any link or downloading any attachment, take 30 seconds to verify. Never trust, always verify.
  • Keep software and devices updated – Vulnerabilities in software has been constant as the #1 exploit opportunity. AI has accelerated scanning capabilities! Delaying updates leaves a window wide open. Enable automatic updates wherever possible on computers, phones, and any apps your business uses. Patch! Patch! Patch!
  • Be careful about what you share online – AI can piece together information from social media, company websites, and public records to build a detailed profile of you or your business and use it to craft highly personalized attacks. The less publicly available, the better!
